Scandinavia, Part 4: Bergen

After three nights each in Copenhagen, Gothenburg, and Oslo, we were on the road – rather rails – again. We took a long (almost six hours) train ride to Bergen. For my first batch on this post, I’ve got three short time lapses: two of that train, urban & rural, and one of the funicular in Bergen! All aboard…

This batch is of the beautiful Norwegian countryside from the train. Crossing the Hardangervidda Plateau, it reaches the highest altitude of any train in Europe.

Arriving in Bergen, we took an informational walk around town, had another great dinner, and went to bed early. The next morning, we took the aforementioned funicular for great views only partially compromised by clouds on what not the rainiest day in this rather damp city. Note ML and the troll…!

Our group has been cut in half, with only Steve and our leader Marishka from the first crew; Craig and Sue are new. The rest of this batch is the first half of our hike up to a couple of lakes…

The second half of our hike was down some narrow, rather muddy trails – lovely all along…

Randomness! Art atop the funicular, inside it, and inside a restaurant in Bryggan – a UNESCO World Heritage Site, then to a military museum, and an old map of the town…

Then I went to the Bergenhus Fortress, which included the military museum, Haakon’s Hall, and the Rosenkrantz Tower. Lots of history going back to a guy named Magnus in the 13th century. This batch ends with fun clip from the top of the tower down into the basement…

This last batch is of the famous houses in the Bryggan area and some other landmarks on my way back to our hotel. Had to include some shots in the fish market, and one of looking up at the funicular from down in town. And, what happens when seafood sees you…?

Perhaps, for now, we will go with the pattern of a new post per accommodation stay? Tomorrow we are off to just a couple of the many Norwegian Fjords. (And: Fun fjord facts?) Farvel for nå…
